DR Class 50: amazing that they are still operational given the design and construction was during WW2 - designed to be powerful, relatively light weight which meant they could go almost anywhere there were suitably gauged rails, rugged and robust but on the cheap and ready to be disposed once damaged beyond repair.

Out of interest, where is the shed with the 50 and other classes?

@ Exile, to keep you informed from our temporary kitchen table in Germany, not far away from Erfurt:

An impression of an old maintenance shed this afternoon:

Back to the cars of yesterday, a lot of memorabilia for sale. I'm now the owner of again another piece of measurement equipment:

The first thing that strikes me is those beautiful sturdy horses pulling an excellent cart.
The second thing is why are the drivers dressed like tailor's shop dummies?

Tradition, and carriage driving is steeped in it ! Bowlers were invented in England and in many places replaced top hats for riding (the bowler had a lower crown and was more sturdy so protected riders from low hanging branches).
Aprons were worn for warmth - in winter, drivers (and grooms) were exposed to the elements so needed to be kept warm and dry as much as possible.

It's a long subject which I won't bore you with, Hotrodder !

I have a similar question about rally drivers and their crash helmets and leathers plus gloves?
