I didn't have to do this, but I got my first 10 year card 15 years ago. My husband did have to take a language test when he got his 10 year card. That was about 10 years ago. So, for us, this is nothing new. Perhaps they have made it a bit more detailed, no idea. Makes sense to me.

The Connexion understands that this would only apply to people applying for cartes de séjour in the future, and would not concern people who already have residence permits. Britons living in France with WA (Withdrawal Agreement) - whether with five year or ten year cards - would also not be affected.

Not unique to France - and not unreasonable.

I renewed my CdS here - and only got a B (5 year) one as I did not have A.1/A.2 written and oral - having always worked for anglophone companies it hasn't been necessary. Something for the to-do list, I guess.

When Fixit and I applied for French nationality over 60s were exempt from language requirements, which isn't the case now.
I do have an aged AS level in French, but didn't bother to present it as it wasn't necessary.
Aside from a certified translation of it, I would have needed proof that it as issued by a valid examination board. I have no idea if that board still exists, so many disappeared in amalgamations.
Another friend who has v good French having worked for many years as an engineer here had to take the language test as he hadn't got a certificate to prove it, and he was just under 60.
