Unbelievable stupidity, or death wish?!

#1 Post by Bayleaf »

Just flicking through the headlines, and seeing the devastation that Hurricane Ian is causing/has caused across the pond. There's a clip about why the waters receded just before the hurricane hit. Seems obvious to me, and I'm not overly bright, but THERE WERE PEOPLE WALKING on the newly exposed beach/ocean floor. Did those people seriously not realise that the receding water will return at any moment?!

Jeez, the stupidity shown by some people - words fail me! Then they get into trouble, and put other people's lives at risks trying to save them.

Darwin would be turning in his grave!!

The sea did exactly the same in Thailand in 2004 before the tsunami/tidal wave. People were walking on the exposed sea bed having no idea what was to come, unlike those idiots in Florida.

@Bayleaf I suspect Darwin would just shrug.
The dolts' French cousins stand on rocks on the stormy Atlantic coast (to prove how brave they are?) before being swept away by a huge wave.

Don't get me started.... We get those here every year here when the grand marées arrive. The number of people who get too close to the edge of the cliffs, get caught on rocks by an incoming tide, try to walk in from the 2 rocky islands on an incoming tide ... that's in Saint Malo. Here in the bay of Mont Saint Michel, the sands are treacherous and when the tide comes in, it just keeps coming (though not at the speed of a galloping horse !). The helicopter gets called out every year at 7,000€/hr to rescue some idiot (sometimes even locals) who don't pay attention. Who pays ? The commune, so indirectly, the locals.

Having been caught out when swimming in the Med in Nice when a young man I have a great respect for water. I swam out a fair distance when one of the sudden storms blew up. It had been dead calm but looking back at the beach the red flags were up. I swam in, got thrown around like I was in a tumbler drier and just stayed with it, not panicking and taking breaths when possible, until it threw me up on the beach.

One cubic metre of water weights one tonne. Think about it! Some idiots don't.

Add another 27kg to that for salt water, that's a bag of cement.

Don't confuse a tsunami with a negative surge from a Hurricane. A tsunami occurs because of a sudden, near instantaneous event. The water rushes out; the water rushes back - with a vengeance.

With a hurricane, the water is slowly blown back from the shore and provided the wind does not instantaneously stop, the water will come back as the wind holding it away from the shore weakens. It may well come back more quickly than it went out but it won't come back like a tsunami.
