All very sensible sounding solutions but where will they live? Before all this started making the news there already was a housing shortage.

Many of the larger farm complexes are able to offer accommodation. It will certainly be shared living. It will probably be just short of totally crap*. It will certainly not be suitable for families. But it will be accommodation.

* There are many UK citizens forced to live in much worse.

Reminds me of 1950s hop picking, but we had so much fun and families lived in real shacks, it was a holiday picnic for us kids.

Yes it does. I too have spent a week or so in a bunk house or a caravan - usually in summer.

Not quite so good in the middle of winter when it's dark outside and the weather is thoroughly miserable.

A bit like holidaying in France compared with year round living here. You can easily get a false impression.

Yes, a huge difference. I read a post on another forum recently where someone mentioned how areas of Brittany seem deserted, etc. because they rarely see the numbers of UK plated cars about these days. My answer to that one is that those cars were owned by full timers living under the radar and not bothering to get their cars registered here. They've either gone back or Brexit has scared them into getting registered.

I have often (over 20 odd years) wondered about so many houses never seem to open their shutters. Second homes? Anyway, I have just become aware of a large demo that took place quite close to here on Saturday. A demo about immigrants with two opposing sides (about a thousand of them) in a small town with 200 gendarmes trying to keep them apart. Tear gas, smoke bombs, etc. a proper knees up. I only heard about it today, must have livened things up a bit. Apart from market day (Wednesday morning) the place always looks abandoned.
