We have one very similar to Bayleaf's photo and RobertArthur's link, which we bought years ago. It's ideal in a small room and looks nicer than the portable convector (we have a couple of those too). As Exile says, the flame-effect looks cosy even if the heating part isn't being used.

Storage heaters seem to have gone out of vogue. We had the big old-fashioned ones in a married quarter in Scotland years ago and they were brilliant, much better than the modern ones that the DOE were replacing them with. They didn't cost a fortune to run either, but then it's hardly realistic to compare the price of electricity in Scotland with that in France ...

Ah, Old Dusty is just happy for a change of view at the moment! That one does look good - and I notice the warm air looks like it would come out underneath, so as close to the ground as possible, which is best (keep those toes warm!)

I had one of those for years. I bought it when I lived in rented accommodation in Germany and wanted a focal point for the living room. I bought it as a bit of a joke but in fact used it every winter evening for over ten years. When I say used it I switched on the incredible realistic flame effect I very rarely used the fan heater part, that worked out to be a very expensive way to heat the room. I eventually gave it to my neighbour here in France who wanted a simple heater for a small room. She is very pleased with it.
