re the dish water - yes I'm 100% sure - why because we have one meal a day (never eaten breakfast) so for two of us two plates, two mugs and 2 glasses. One wash up a day. I'm not cooking so no pans just a salad- eh and less of the greasy .

I'm of the same thought re water especially as our tiny village has several holiday homes - British, American and several from the Paris area. Three weeks ago one of our Paris neighbours arrived. 3 small children, 2 dogs plus another couple with two children and a dog that stayed for two weeks. During last week another few relatives arrived. I was thinking all those showers possible twice a day during the very hot weather, kiddies that are going to need changing and all the necessary washing of clothing. Meanwhile we are putting the plug in the bath to take a shower and collecting the shower water in a large bucket and using to flush the loo. We haven't used the dishwasher in weeks and have cut back on the amount of pots we're using in fact have brought out some old paper plates. The washing up water is done in a bowl with a small amount of water and rinsed in another bowl again with a small amount of water - every drop of water we can save we do save. So I'm sorry exile but I'm not too worried about entertainment as we don't have any here except the local football teams & boules nor do we have any transport whatsoever, a couple of bars and two restaurants. Our local restaurant is now charging 50c for those tourists that walk in wanting to use the loo and/or asking for a glass of water and I don't blame them. To get to the supermarket its walk, cycle or drive 4km (our village has nothing at all which I think is the attraction) So knowing about the waste of water from just one of my holiday home owners vexes me when we are doing our bit ............sorry - rant over

We use one if these in the shower to keep all the water you run off untill the hot water arrives.



Normally for draining your oil, about 10€ in a car spares place.

@widge great idea and if we had a shower cubicle that would be ideal but as we only have a shower bath we just put the plug in and then scoop the water out once getting out of the bath.

Its a 6 ltr container with a dish in the side for collecting oil from a car engine, just take the yellow bungs out to use it, when its full you can just carry it one handed out to the garden, no need to use 2 hands and trying to open doors with your elbows and feet, while spilling the contents of a bowl

We've always used a watering can ! Widge's flat thing would be much easier for emptying a bath !

We scoop our water into one of those large flexible rubber buckets with a handle each side - the type you can put your laundry in to carry outside or use for gardening as we do as well (we have several of them) !

I avoided the problem when I built the plumbing by having a hot water closed loop passing all the HW taps and back to the HW tank. A flow sensor is activated when a tap is opened which starts the closed loop circulation pump. I usually crack open a tap for one second and wait till the HW has circulated the loop (about 100m, it’s a big house) a few minutes later HW is directly available with no wasted water. It is a bit like the systems in hotels although they circulate HW continually which is a bit of a waste of energy overnight.

In all of this dislike for tourists and second home owners, it is worth remembering that most of not all of us, were those folk once. That is how we found the area to suit our needs, found our house, and for some at least, spent our time most summers.
