Entertainment in the past was often ‘against ‘ a minority and racist,sexist,homophobic etc (To a greater or lesser degree) As time has gone on it has become recognised that this is unacceptable and people’s tastes have changed

But isn't it still? Just different targets.

Have peoples tastes changed or have we all just been brainwashed in to thinking that this was right and that was wrong. Love thy Neighbour a very old "comedy" series about the stereotypical working man who suddenly acquires a black neighbour, I believe it was Rudolph Walker who played the neighbour of colour, as we now have to say, didn't hear him kicking up about having been forced to play that role. Yes it is not deemed to be politically correct these days, but I am of an age where I can remember having a good laugh at it, as well as other series, such as Alf Garnet. I noticed Mr Banjo, in his discussion with JD, corrected him when he referred to someone as being a black man, saying that he should have been referred to as a man, with the omission of the black word, and that is my opinion, just a man. However we are constantly reminded about achievers of colour, being described as the first black whatever to achieve whatever they have. Obama was the first black president of the USA, not the next president, it was blatantly obvious he wasn't any other colour than what he naturally is. Constantly reminded of slavery and how sorry we should all be, yes horrible disgusting, and I have recently discovered that a distant great great grandfather some generations back was a ships carpenter on a slave ship, does that make me feel bad, not really, he was doing what was the norm in the times he lived in.

So basically you think showing concern and consideration for someone you feel is different to yourself is a result of brainwashing and their feelings shouldn’t be taken into consideration? If you had something that marked up out as different,how would you feel if it was pointed out,referenced ,laughed at several time a day?

Alf Garnet was parody of the most unpalatable attitudes of some of the traditional white working-class in Britain at the time: loud-mouthed anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic,sexist, etc.
My late step father was the crane operator for one of the series' of that show and Warren Mitchell stayed in character all of the time. They were having lunch in a pub one day and some loud mouthed git in there drinking was waxing lyrical to 'Alf' about how great he was at putting the coloureds in their place and women should know their place etc.................... after the bloke had finished mouthing off 'Alf' turned round and said, do you know what the funniest thing is though, the guy said no what, 'Alf' said I'm actually taking the piss out of ignorant bigoted racist idiots like you and you're too bloody stupid to realise it.

If I am allowing that to happen and being well paid for it as was the case with Mr Walker then that is on my head.

That was another one of those 1970's sitcoms that took the p out of ignorance wasn't it.

I had a huge crush on Richard Beckinsale.

Growing up in the 70's with shows like those mentioned made me realise how unacceptable and disgusting racism, sexism etc. is, so I suppose they did what they were supposed to do, by opening the eyes of a younger generation.

Trouble is, as with Alf Garnett, and now with a series on Sunday nights called Ridley Road, I wonder if the "dig" at those racists is too subtle. It makes uncomfortable viewing, and I'm not sure why I'm still watching it! It just makes me want to shout at the characters for their dispicable behaviour.

Times have/are achanging - and it would be so nice to embrace all the colours, all the sizes as one - we're all just the same humans underneath it all. Sadly, I don't think it will happen in our lifetime.
