That is normal. It takes a while for the "soup" to begin stinking like a rotting corpse. Once it does the flies can't resist it. We hang ours up between the chicken pen and the house. Does a great job and it takes several weeks to fill up.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

I've been having a look at these traps but I really can't see that they work any better than the home-made, cut-off-lemonade bottle traps I use for trapping wasps and frelons. I'm wondering if I use some leftover catfood swished around in water, rather than the wine/jam mix I usually use, whether this would make them more fly-specific. At a fraction of the cost of those red top traps :?: I'll let you know... :D

Only one way to find out.
Buy one & hang it up alongside your home made trap.
Lots of folk will be interested in the results.

Some of the current ones already have..they're solid! :D The beauty of home-made ones is that you chuck them when full and replace them for the cost of a re-cycled bottle, two staples, a drop of vino at €1.50/l + a spot of jam that's never going to get eaten (or aforementioned cat-food) and a bit of wire or bailer twine. It doesn't add up to €12.99! I thought I might get flash and use red string to hang them up, if flies are attracted to red......
