Simply lifting the edge of the lid just enough with a coin or screwdriver breaks the seal and lets air in without spoiling further use of the lid.

Yes, been there. Some are easier to break than others, so I always use a tea towel or J cloth !

My bugbear is the flip top on water bottles (yes, we do use gourds and tap water as well) - impossible to open without splashing yourself.
But at least tooth brush wrappings are easier than they used to be.

Like @Doug I always run jars under the hot tap before attempting to open. If that doesn't work and I don't want to keep the jar, I pierce the lid with a bradawl which always works.
Thanks Blaze - that works no more cut fingers and thumbs. 8-)

Re; the flip top water bottles, I cover them with a tea towel when I open them to stop getting splashed.
