[mention]niemeyjt[/mention] I really don't know other than I guess as time passes along with ourselves, these programmes will fizzle out. At that point in time ie 60s/70s, we didn't have the variety of programmes and channels that we have now. I sometimes wish that people would accept that that was then but not now as we 'oldies' accept it and move on from it.

One of the great things about British humour is the ability to laugh at ourselves. It's something which sets us apart from many other nations.
But have we lost the ability to see the difference between a parody and an insult today - have we become over-sensitive ? Have we lost the ability to see that, for example, Alf Garnet was showing how ridiculous it was to be so bigoted and racist ?
Remember the series "Goodness Gracious Me !" ?? I bet the makers and actors were laughing all the way to the bank ! They were quite happy to take the pi$$ out of themselves ... but perhaps it's different when someone else does it.
Then there was "Never mind the Quality, feel the width" about 2 tailors, one RC and one Jewish ?
We can't change the past though we can learn from it. Is banning really the answer ? If everything perceived as "bad" is banned, how are we to make an effort to improve what we do in the future ?

I loved Goodness Gracious Me very clever comedy
Something that hit me recently the programme Friends ran from 1994 to 2004 and is considered one of the biggest shows ever,recently it has had some publicity for various reasons. A few articles I read were saying how badly some of the humour has dated and would not be acceptable today. I commented on this to some young colleagues who weren’t born when it started but who enjoy watching it ,they thought it was funny,however a couple of days later they came back to me and said they had paid a bit more attention and people wouldn’t get away with a lot of it today
