On reading these posts I'm very glad that we don't buy each other pressies for Christmas or birthdays, never have.
However its different through out the year if either of us fancies something.

The thought that occurs to me is that it is likely to arrive with a UK moulded plug. If it is just for charging a cable free hoover then no problem, but if it is for a machine with a cable running directly off the mains, an adaptor is not going to be rated for the power (even though now reduced from the past) and cutting off the plug and putting on a French one will invalidate the guarantee.

I don't think I have ever even thought about a guarantee, or the idea of trying to claim any sort of help if I had one. Like insurance. There's always an uphill battle to get a claim resolved.

I have found Amazon UK better than Digitec here - here they repair or replace rather than refund - and if it is a computer motherboard (as I suffered recently) you cannot wait four weeks for replacement with all the bits scattered everywhere - so you buy a second one.

I have to say this is the first failure in 20 years, so I am not inclined to keep it as a spare - so my son wants it for Christmas to drop into his old PC. Great - except that means it needs a new processor and RAM as well. I got the latter in singles day sales - so now I have to hope the former is in the Black Friday offerings.

Doubt it would invalidate the guarantee. What happens if you tread on the plug and break it? You fit a replacement.

My thoughts exactly I have several discussions with manufacturers customer services regarding this question, one of the most notable being under worktop washing machines, you can hardly drill a 2 inch hole in the worktop and pass the plugtop and lead through that, put a socket behind the machine and plug it in before sliding the machine back, dangerous, if it develops a fault you need to pull it out to isolate it. The idea was to provide a switched fused spur above the worktop and wire the lead directly to that, which of course entails cutting the plug off.

I think the T&Cs will say that such damage would have to be mended by an approved repairer

If you buy from UK to use something in France you will clearly need to change the plug. Possibly get away with an adapter or extension lash up if it is a low wattage gadget but not on larger appliances or those with a heating element.
So do you ship it back to the UK for waranty claims? Just wondering.

I remember when plugs were not included on the appliance, just three wires for you to put the plug on. I have had a delonghi expresso machine with a moulded supply cable which was faulty after a couple of days, that went back to John Lewis, unfortunately I had cut the 13 amp off so I had to reassemble it so it looked original, then they wanted to plug it in and test it at the counter, that would have provided some fun

Wow! You're right. I remember when I first arrived in England with my grandparents (1967?). They had to go out land buy loads of appliances and I heard the guy in the shop saying they would have to pay a bit more for the plugs. A real WTF moment. Once my grandfather got his head around that he said "in that case you can keep it" and turned to leave the shop. Instant free plugs for the whole bundle.
