Do we really actually need 5G?

Do we really actually need 5G?

#21 Post by Hotrodder »

If a customer is with Orange he is given an Orange router, no? And if we buys a Huawei router online how does he configure it to work on the end of the Orange wire? Or does he have to dump Orange and start fresh with all new kit?
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

5g is not just about speed, it's the enabling technology for the advancement of the IOT (Internet Of Things) which amongst others developing technologies includes self driving cars.

For 5G - as opposed to ADSL etc - put in the relevant SIM and off you go.

I currently have a Digitec (Sunrise?) SIM in my TP-Link 4G+ router - previously I had a 3 SIM in it.

Because it is NSA Non Stand Alone as opposed to SA Stand Alone. In France at moment the only SA 5G service is in the Sub 6 Ghz band. All ISPs have
frequencies in NR New Radio 78 band centred on 3.5 GHz. The millimetric Wave frequency is still to be auctioned by the french authorities.
In the case of free the 5G NSA uses two frequency bands 700 mhz for the 5G component DL Download only. At the same time the 1800 mhz 4G frequency is used as an anchor, bande d'accrocher, as well as the
UL Upload to the cell antenna. LTE is more of a qualification for the original 4G service where 4G means ONE frequency, 4G+ means TWO frequencies and 4G++ means THREE frequencies. A device with CA Channel Agregation will be able to increase its bandwidth and data capacity.
My Huawei B715s-23c modem-router has 3 channel agregation. My Xiaomi 5G phone has 5 channel agregation. At the moment in france 3 CA is the maximum. But the government has released one of the 3G channels for conversion to 4G to improve LTE service. I am pleased to inform that free has got the largest bandwidth allocation and will soon have FOUR channels in 4G.

Yes plug & play certainly if the router is supplied by the ISP. Often a devious way of making you pay extra for telephone. If you buy a brand new or a router previously used in Australia or Finland etc. It will probably be necessary to change the APN to the french ISP/FAI. The SIM pin code left in the router may also require deletion.

I was referring to your screenshot showing speeds - so it is 4G LTE you are showing not 5G then.
