Re: Sayings from childhood
You'll grow tatas in that neck & have you washed behind your tabs. I have to admit to never washing my neck except once a week when I had a bath. I hated cold water on my neck - cold water being the norm in our house.
With this hand, I will lift your sorrows. Your cup will never be empty, for I will be your wine. With this candle, I will light your way into darkness. With this ring, I ask you to be mine.........The Corpse Bride

"Don't sit on the radiator/stone steps, you'll get piles" (we didn't have radiators at home when I was a child).
"If you pull faces and the wind changes, you'll stay like that"
"Take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves"
"Ne'er a lender nor a borrower be"

When I asked mum to buy me something she used to say them that ask don't get, them that don't ask don't want. That shut me up whilst I tried to find a way around it.

One used by older ladies in Sheffield when seeing another woman dressed "up to the nines" (tarty) " She's no better than she should be!"

I remember being told "Dress like a popsie and you'll be treated like one"

My mother was always spouting those two. I think the last one is from a Shakespeare play.

I've always tried to be the same, but my trouble is that I call a spade a fn spade which causes problems.

If I asked mum for some money for sweets from my pocket money I hadn't yet got she'd say : owing more went out one day owing more than she could pay owing more came back that day owing more
