As for socialism, then you have to realise that much of the western European mainland is significantly more left wing than the UK of today. You make some excellent points.
The most important one is the rise of extremist politics across Europe, including France.
I hate the extreme right as much as I hate the extreme left.
Different ideologies but with the same MO.
France has always had extreme left and right wing views and politicians.
Something that we have largely avoided in the UK.
Communism never really happened here and neither has Fascism, but both have raised their ugly heads in France,with some success.
Even now, if you compare the UK's political spectrum to that of France.
France is more extreme, both to the right and to the left.
For me, that equals division in the future.
Lord knows it's bad enough in the UK, but France needs to watch out.

Perhaps there will be religious division in UK if the Muslim/ Hindu fighting in the Midlands gets out of hand.

@Richard: It's true that the British have always been more subtle about their extremism. Mosley in the 20s and 30s and union leaders (Jack Dash & co) in the 60s seemd not to have made the dent in mainstream politics as they might have wished, although the aristos and royalty apparently admired the fascist concept with some gusto.
Certainly in the 50s, 60s and 70s, racism was rife until legislation called a halt to the worst of it. That, I believe, is the distinction - la liberté d'expression is sacrosanct.

I don't think that racism in Britain today is worse than the current racism in France.
I have seen racist actions in France that would be unimaginable in Britain.

People in glass houses should never throw bricks.
France has one of the largest Muslim populations in europe, which does not bode well for the future.
