School Uniforms

After 50 years without, the issue seems to have raised its head again with new laws proposed. Of course, it still has to be passed.

I think school uniforms are a good idea and a leveller. They avoid the peer pressure to wear expensive designer clothes and trainers. By all means give support to parents who can’t afford the uniform

Hmm. Our 4 children went from English uniforms* (ouch) to French no-uniform schools. I really don't think there's much difference, given that uniforms had to be bought at designated stores at inflated prices.

The purchase price problem will probably kibosh the whole thing though it may be a reason to hand out more cash for some folks to buy them.
Imagine the outcry if only some outlets could sell the right uniforms; concurrance déloyal which might well be illegal in this case anyway.

It may well be the price of a school uniform would cost less than the designer ripped jeans, trainers or whatever ... and wouldn't need to be changed so often because it's last year's model ....

We had a very young 18 year old working on the accueil of the vaccination centre. One day she announced that she would not be coming back because several times she'd received vulgar comments about her clothes and her body and she was very upset. It was unsurprising - bare midriff, plunging necklines, very short skirts when the rest of us were in uniform or a gown. She had no concept of dressing appropriately for the job and she certainly wouldn't have appreciated any of us hinting that she should dress a bit more discretely, (she'd already refused to wear a gown ....). Sadly none of the bods in charge would say anything either.

School uniforms are a good and potentially cheaper idea and the type of clothing necessary can be bought cheaply in supermarkets. Unfortunately many schools dictate that the clothes should be bought from specific expensive suppliers. It's the badges/logos that should be compulsary and these can be stitched on to clothes, transferred later if necessary, and as long as the colours and design of the clothing meets the school requirement then it's done. This is by far and away the best option.

Like so much of life today, its all about money. As an outsider, I always thought school uniforms was a bit weird. A bit like some military type brainwash. Then maybe it was trying to instill some sort of group loyalty mindset.
Life itself is the great leveller rabbit mentions. Even while wearing the same clothes the young will still have to compete, what phone are they carrying???

Having been to a school where uniform was compulsory, if you think its a leveller and stops competition between pupils it doesn't .Why because the children of the better off change their clothes as and when and don't wear hand me downs or which was frequent the overcoat which wasn't part of the uniform would be a very desirable overly priced one that only the better off could buy for their child, same goes for shoes.No uniform is not for me.

There are uniforms and uniforms. The schools I worked in tended to have a ‘uniform’ that was no more than a particular sweatshirt that was worn by the vast majority of the children without trouble or expense. In general the parents preferred having a uniform as it saved so much time in the morning.
