Born in my father's home town and shared that northern wit. He had no sides to him and no sense of 'I am a celebrity'. Just a lovely person who so enjoyed meeting interesting people. RIP

I once saw an interview with him where he said that he'd been asked to do 'Who do you think you are?' but they had found nothing 'televisual' in his family history. Just generation after generation of law abiding, working class stock.

Good family entertainment, spawning the inevitable copycat shows such as Wogan, Harty and a plethora of others, only one that comes anywhere near to it nowadays is Graham Norton, albeit forget in depth revealing interviews with him.
