Thanks for the heads up, Curtis. My father-in-law was one of the group of enthusiasts who came back from WW2 with heads full of ideas to go faster at El Mirage. Other names became famous from that bunch of petrol heads, starting very successful businesses making and selling speed parts and accessories, some are still well-known today. I was lucky to grow up in So.Cal. in the 50s and 60s. Model A Fords were cheap as chips and petrol was 29cents a gallon. Enthusiasm and ingenuity was the driving force, and it was an interest you didn't have to be rich to get involved in (unlike today). Guys would trek out to the dry lakes at the weedend to race in their daily driver, unbolting everything that wasn't necessary to save weight, and then putting it all back on for the drive home.
