Fire beside Glasgow Central Station

#1 Post by Blaze »

I was very sad to read about this. I used to live near Glasgow and knew the area well. Fortunately no-one seems to have been injured but many small businesses have been lost. The fire is thought to have started in a vape shop, possible from exploding batteries. The building predates Glasgow Central station which doesn't seem to have been touched though there will be many structural checks of surrounding buildings once the fire is well and truly out.
Sadly the building will probably be replaced by some budding architect's horror.

Dodgy batteries are everywhere these days. Even in cars.

I hadn't seen racist comments but I gather the usual conspiracy rubbish seems to have come out on social media - that the building was burnt to make way for a mosque and other such rubbish. I use FB but fortunately that sort of thing never comes up for me - all my contacts are people know or are connected with them.
Just as with the lies spread about re Brexit, people don't bother to filter what they see on social media and believe everything they read. With AI, this is only going to become worse.

It’s mostly on Twitter that I have seen stuff but a lot of racists seem to have jumped on it

It’s quite scary how many people are basically racist and want to believe crap

Religious tolerance used to be held in high regard. Social media and its devious algorhythms have force fed people with racism instead.

In the summer of 2018 I saw what was left of the famous Glasgow School of Art, a timeline of two fires. It is astonishing how much architectural heritage, all the efforts of craftsmen, can be destroyed in just a few hours.

I remember the Art School fires - a couple of my cousins studied there and another taught there ....
Rennie Mackintosh's work is beautiful. We used to live near the Hill House in Helensburgh - such wonderful simple design ....
