Passing

#1 Post by Grangela »

I’m not going to pass. I’m not going to pass away. I’m going to die. Not yet, hopefully, but when the time comes I will die.
I don’t understand why people avoid the word die. Or dead.
In French they use the euphemism disparaître. Before I knew better I was rather concerned about the number of people disappearing in France.
So there you go, Grangela has posted and no doubt upset a few people.
My brother is in intensive car. He will soon die, not pass away.

I also agree.

Another French euphemism:

il/elle nous a quité

Sorry to hear about your brother, Grangela.
I agree with your sentiments and with exile's - that always sounds as though the subject has popped out for something from the corner shop.

I agree too, Grangela and I'm sorry to hear about your brother :(
"Disparu" is so ambiguous unless you know the context, and "pass away" just sounds wrong.

I thought I was the only one who didn't like euphanisms for death.

I wonder why folk say they have lost their wife/husband/etc.
Always seems a bit careless to me.

Yes. Whenever I hear of someone losing their husband I wonder. While out shopping? Put a tracker on the old bugger.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

Or the ridiculous Victorian wording one sees on gravestones "fell asleep on....."

A neighbour's husband has just died on December 21st and a café/pub friend died just after Christmas 2021. First 90+ and second late 70's. Both had a good innings.
