Tearless onions

#1 Post by Char »

The "Sunions" first went on sale in the US four years ago after decades of cross-breeding of less pungent varieties of the vegetable to find one that doesn't irritate cooks' eyes.

The retailer bringing them to the UK market, Waitrose, says they are perfect for cooking with children.

We've got these Dame Edna Everage ones which we were given as a present. They're brilliant, only problem is they won't fit over a pair of reading glasses.

Having been in France for over a month now (!) and done quite a lot of cooking I can report that French onions make me weep like anything whereas UK ones seldom did.

They make me weep too, demi, on the rare occasions I have to buy them :D On the subject of onions, peeling of: Does anyone else use one of these? https://www.amazon.fr/Savon-inoxydable- ... 0620&psc=1
I was given one last year, and find it quite miraculous for leaving hands odour-free after onion or garlic prep.

My son was on about this little device the other day - for getting onions/cooking smells off your hands. Sounds like it actually works then?

No I don't cos I run my hands gently over the knife blade whilst washing it 🙀 or the s/s pan that I put my peelings etc in :D I read a long time ago that running your hands over anything stainless steel will remove the smell of onion/garlic and it does work. Probably one of those Mrs Hinch tips?

I can't stand children, regardless how they are cooked.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

It does, Bayleaf. Also slightly less risky than stroking a knife blade

Tearless onions

My older son swears by rinsing an onion under the tap before cutting and peeling.
A chef I recently saw on YouTube suggested that putting the onion in the fridge for an hour works.
I don't eat children (with or without onions) for fear of prosecution, er, indegestion.
