We had no idea it would end this way

#1 Post by Headers »

Today we had our 13 year old ‘lab’ put to sleep.
It’s true she had started to slow down over the last few months and after a set of strokes and a liver problem as well as numerous tumours, those were the things that I thought would do for her.
But it wasn’t any of those. She did love to rolypoly on the grass and did her normal trick on Saturday. Unfortunately she popped a disc in her mid spine and lost the use of her back half and all that goes with it.
We talked it through with our vet this morning and came to the conclusion that trying to treat this at her age and with her health conditions would be more for our benefit than hers and it was extremely unlikely to be successful. So we agreed to let her slip away.
It was very carefully managed and I have nothing but praise for my vet.
Such a sad sad day.

I'm so sorry Headers, my thoughts are with you, never an easy thing to do and I know how much you must be hurting.

Thank you for posting that beautiful photo.

I feel such sadness for you Headers. It never gets any easier. It's just a year since we lost our beautiful Blaze and he's so missed.

Once they get over a certain age we have to weigh up very carefully their chances of making a good recovery, given other conditions and their general state of health.

What a lovely looking dog she was.

Sorry at your loss - but your memories are full of 13 years of happiness - and not a few extra months of ever-increasing suffering at the end.

So sorry headers, she was beautiful.

4 years ago in December we lost a beloved dog at just 9 years old. After a series of several frequent seizures for 3 months it was decided by our vet she probably had a brain tumour.

I feel your loss, it's so painful when we lose a dear pet.

I'm attaching a poem, which I hope you find a slight comfort, as I did.

Thankyou. That brought a tear to my eye. Her brother died at 4 with lung cancer. The last 2 weeks were horrendous - we waited too long for an improvement that was never going to come. I was always worrying about her after that. I must admit I feel a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders now.

I’m so sorry Headers, but the good life you gave her enabled her to share 13 wonderful years with you and she will have left you with many happy memories.

I lost Freddy 14 months ago and although Raffi now fills my life I reflect on life with Freddy, daily.

She was a beautiful dog.

Virtual hugs from me too, Headers. It doesn't get any easier, but you have to be pragmatic for your pet's sake.

SO sorry to read your posting, Headers, and know only too well how devastating it is to say goodbye to a beloved dog. Letting them go is the kindest thing we can do for them, even if it's such a hard decision for us to make.
That's a beautiful photo of her.
Our Aussie, Bimbo is 15, in fine form for her age, but a scan a couple of weeks ago revealed a mass by her liver so we know that we will have to make the same decision as you at some point ....
Our loved pets are never forgotten .... they take such a huge place in our hearts.
Huge virtual hugs, Headers ......

Take comfort in knowing you did your very best for your gorgeous girl.
Remember her with love .. the love you were fortunate enough to share for 13 years.
