"Interesting" modern first names!

#1 Post by Bayleaf »

I know there are some really, erm, interesting names given to babies these days. But this one has left me scratching my head - Sully. A niece has just given birth to her second son, and his first name is Sully. Why????! I can't find any nice reference to that name. In France, Sully means a stain doesn't it?!

His second name is Peter - so maybe it'll change to that eventually, but why do people have to choose such bizarre names - often to the detriment of the child?!

I feel old!

Yes - The nickname of Chesley Sullenberger (the pilot who safely landed his stricken plane on the Hudson River) - I guess with a first name like Chesley then Sully is an easier name!

That reminds me of when I was a kid and a French uncle came over to stay with us in England.
As we were driving down the road he laughed and said "You English have filthy houses and you like to advertise the fact too on boards outside!"
He was talking about the "For Sale" signs........

She was probably a "Dr Quinn" addict. Perhaps short for "Sullivan" ??
Years ago, French babies had to be given a saint's name and each department could veto a name if they didn't "approve" of it. Friends were refused the name "Malo" because it was considered a Breton name not from Normandy where they lived (this was 50 odd years ago). Another Breton name "Fanch" should have a tilde over the "n" but even today there is disagreement about whether it's allowed on official documents. There was a big fuss in 2017 in Quimper when a couple wanted to call their child Fanch.
