The Big Freeze Winter 1963

#1 Post by Sparkle »

I watched this programme last night because we moved from Lancashire to Nottinghamshire at the end of Feb 63. Our lorry came off the road and the furniture, tea chests etc were thrown off the lorry. It all arrived in Nottingham in not too bad a condition but amazingly the fridge - not expecting it to work - was plugged in and it was fine. My mum had that fridge until 1977 when she moved to Wales and didn't bother to take it with her. Thoroughly enjoyed the documentary - I hadn't realised just how bad it had been but then I wasn't quite seven years old in '63!

With this hand, I will lift your sorrows. Your cup will never be empty, for I will be your wine. With this candle, I will light your way into darkness. With this ring, I ask you to be mine.........The Corpse Bride

I remember the school gave us what they considered to be a treat at break time instead of the usual cocoa : Bovril made with milk 🤢 The staff were surprised that none of us liked it  We'd pour it back into the cauldron when no-one was looking
We used the tin trays from the kitchen cookers to go tobogganing !

I remember it well. I was 14 and we still had slush in London in May. OH was at university in Leeds and said they had a mild winter up there.

I remember it well, the night it started my brother went out to play in the snow under the streetlights, my best friend next door was furious as she was already in her jimjams and her Mum wouldn't let her and her little brother get dressed and go out.
My mum and next door each side used to pour boiling water on to the snow, then dig a patch for our respective cats to do their biz. None of those horrible litter trays in those days!
When we went to birthday parties, in some houses we had to take bottles or flasks of water to save the host Mum having to get more water from the tanker
How do people live without at least one dog in the house?

When the Spanish brought ‘hot’ chocolate back from Central America it became a huge hit with the rich and powerful throughout Europe. I wonder if it would have caught on as quickly if they had made it like the Aztecs had using hot water, the Spanish mistakenly used milk.
