Just had a google. The sea did indeed freeze at low tide and in the harbour.

I recall walking downhill home from school in January 1963 (I was in my first year) slipping and trying to hold my cookery basket of fruit salad and shortbread level. I know what I cooked as I still have the recipe exercise book with dated recipes (mind you it’s started to fall apart).
