There were 5 of these but now only 3..We are trying to figure out a way to protect the survivors. We think they are Swallowtail caterpillars. They're on fennel plants

Yes Swallowtails love umbelliferea and in our garden also head for the fennel

We've been putting bowls of water around the garden for the birds during this hot spell - unfortunately the Magpies have been monopolising them not only to quench their thirsts but bathe in them too. They have scared off all the other birds - 'orrible creatures.

We've got numerous bowls of water around the garden all year round for our cat. Her two larger bowls are frequently used as shower baths by the sparrows. The cat walks off in disgust when she sees them in her watering hole. Fortunately I think she keeps larger birds out of the garden with her prowling which suits me as a neighbour's garden has resident magpies, crows, doves and lots of starlings that seem to like their massive cherry trees. Now & again the doves will come in for a drink but they soon scarper when our cat presents herself.

I fished a swimming hedgehog out of our pool this morning. It scuttled off into the hedge. I hope it will be ok

@manonthemoon2 Apparently they are good swimmers but exhaust themselves and drown if they can't get out of the pond/pool etc. That was lucky that you saw it and saved it and hopefully it will be OK.

It wasn't a ragondin in the trap, as expected, this morning. It was a badger  He was curled up deeply asleep after obviously having been digging all night. He'd managed to make a 15cm round hole in the cage and another 15cm deep in the soil underneath, before giving up. Very relieved that he was asleep, I removed the door furthest away....no response. Removed the second one...no response. So I crept away :shh: When I was about 50m away, he woke up and trotted out and away into the sunflowers. One very lucky badger who won't be in a hurry to sample peaches again!

Large bat. Not in the garden but in the bedroom. About 5:30 this morning the Mrs. nudges me awake and says there's a bat in the room! I woke to see a huge one (about 10" wingspan) circling overhead. Haven't a clue how he got there. I got up and opened the two velux windows but he just kept circling. I held up a pillow trying to herd him toward a window but no luck. In the end I found an old sheet and eventually managed to throw it over him and chuck it out of the window to set him free. I must have made a hilarious sight, chasing a frightened bat around the room in the noddy.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.
