I can't believe the prices I'm seeing being quoted!

Here in Spain branded monosplit systems can be bought for under €500 with standard fitting rarely costing more than a couple of hundred Euros. For anyone with moderate skills DIY installation is very straightforward.

Rent a truck and come to Spain and load up with them, you'll make a small fortune!

The problem with panic purchases for one off events is that just like A/C's in cars regular use is essential, lack of use will cause problems in the mid to long term. If you do buy one be sure to give it a full blast run at least once a month.

IMHO if you buy cheap you get cheap. In our early days we did that several times and after a few months would throw the thing away and buy the one we should have bought in the first place. At our time of life whatever we install has to be good from day one and last

In retrospect I can see why you read my post that way but the comments about cheap units and buying a truck load of AC's were not intended not intended to be coupled.

Our split system was installed in the bedroom a week ago. Brilliant and using a lot less electricity than the old portable unit used which was too small anyway. Result!

We had a split unit reversible system fitted in our bedroom in France several years ago cost about €1800; we wanted a silent system as near as possible - it’s extremely quiet . The local company’s supply and fitting of aircon was very highly recommended by several friends, including a couple who had it fitted in their cellar before it was fitted in their house - he was a master of wine and they went on to run two wine shops.

They fitted it carefully, tidied up when they were finished and said no servicing was needed apart from cleaning dust etc from it. They gave excellent service a few years later when it made a terrible noise and woke us up in the middle of the night - my poor husband fell out of bed, injuring his head and splitting the remaining half big toe - blood all over the white ceramic tiles! It seems that ice formed in the system and hit the fan, hence the noise.

The company came out as soon as I phoned next morning, ordered a part (new fan I think) and returned to fit it as soon as it arrived - thank goodness as it was during another canicule.

Our heating bills nose-dived from the first autumn/winter after it was fitted, as we no longer used the heating that the builders had installed; the flat is south-facing, so we get a lot of warmth from the sun. We occasionally use a fan heater in the evening in January/February when it’s bitterly cold.Some people don’t believe how cold it can get down in the Gard/Languedoc; the UK government doesn’t - no winter fuel payment for that very reason.

The standard of work here is excellent. When we had the bathroom done the guy did a lot of work in the courtyard but before he started he put an old carpet down and at the end of the day he just rolled it up and put it in his van. No mess at all. Same with the roofer,tiler,electrician etc.
