I might put on hold searching for a companion for Jules, his behaviour certainly suffered during the week Jazz was here, whether it was 2 males, I don't know, there was no aggro but they didn't bond and he seemed to feel an element of competition.
Jules is back to normal, at dinner last night and breakfast this morning, no anxiety at all, and, in the forest and field this morning, he came racing back to the whistle and the call each time. But I noticed that sometimes the whistle just makes him stop and turn and it is my deep, gruff, call of his name, and viens-la, which starts him running. Then, just to be sure I wave my arms like a giant bird and make all sorts of excited noises.

Interesting though, sometimes he does not seem to seek the treat, and mooches about around me once back. :)

That's good news, Spardo. Perhaps he felt insecure with another dog, or perhaps it was just Jazz. It shows how important it is to see how he and another dog would get on before committing to something more permanent.

Yes, adopting wasn't what I was seeking at the outset, it was just that these particular rescues do not like fostering but it might have backfired, without adoption with only one week to finalise, it might have had a different outcome and someone else would have been saddled with an unsuitable pet. Until the final nail in the coffin, his escape over the gate, previously thought impossible because of the height, I was almost prepared to give it another week if they agreed, though I had noted the effect on Jules and might not have gone through with it.

It's so hard to introduce adult dogs who have histories. It sometimes takes a while for them to suss each other out and the end result can be good or not so good. It isn't easy to assess this in a half hour introductory session. It does seem that perhaps Jules is quite content to be the one and only dog, getting all your attention.

This is true Veem, but there are always exceptions. I remember how well Jules got on with Harper Grace, the blind Dobie. She was very confident in her rejection of her dark world and ran free with abandon. After a couple 'handbag' spats they sometimes played with each other, neck wrestling, and even shared the settee with each other from time to time. Like Jazz, similar ages too. :)
