For the unfortunate souls that don't recognise the Model A Ford instrument panel below:
The little 8-pointed star at the top is the fuel guage. The centre of it is an actual window into the petrol tank. There's a little wheel that is meant to indicate the tank level. When you fill it right up the petrol actually shows through the glass. Luckily modern petrol pump nozzles shut off before the petrol spills out onto the hot engine directly below the filler neck. :? Elf and safety wouldn't allow that sort of design today, or the rod operated brakes. In the event of an emergency stop the method is to brace both feet on the brake pedal and attempt to pull the steering wheel off its column. :o

For a far more accurate fuel gauge I also carry a length of dowelling to dip the tank.

I enjoyed a great weekend at the Bressuire historic Grand Prix. Lots and lots of lovely cars.

Primitive indeed. Twin Stromberg SUs and a sod to balance.

Watching the Le Mans Classic with 67 Bentleys. What a magnificent sight. Must be worth an absolute fortune.

I've never done Strombergs but SUs are very straightforward. Once they get a bit of wear (commonly around the spindle) it does become a pointless exercise trying to get them tuned. Since the SU factory shut down decades ago I'm wondering how people manage for spares these days.

Interesting those carbs for the NSU Ro80. Advice from the German NSU Ro80 club.
