With great reluctance I have agreed that someone can come and look at my 17 year old Berlingo with a view to buying it. It has been such a good and trusty friend over 13 years and nearly half a million kms, but it is now surplus to requirements and is just cluttering up the garden.

I have completed the mammoth task of clearing all my old stuff out of it, and believe me there was a helluver lot, the storage capacity of this car is prodigious. Over the years I have accumulated a great mass of blankets, donations from kind dog lovers, and many are worth keeping. But there is also a great pile of really mucky ones which can't be cleaned as they all have many rips, tears, and sodding great holes in them.

Do they go in a big bag in the rubbish bins for the garbo lorry to collect, or to the dechetterie?

Or can anybody think of another use for them? An art installation perhaps, pinned or glued to a great big board?
I wonder if Tracey Emmins would be interested.

Why not get in touch with Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris? A fortune has been spent to pack the Arc de Triomphe. Your old blankets could be used to wrap a small statue in Paris ! Just call it "art" and promise that the money raised will be donated to the SPA ...

At the least, to the clothes bin at the decheterie where they will get shredded and re-used rather than general waste.

But if you know someone moving, or with surplus furniture in storage, they may appreciate them as protective blankets.

Think I'll try the dechetterie J, but they are a bit manky, as per OP, and some of the crisp light brownish bits stuck here and there may not be welcomed by someone for their treasured Chippendales.

If they're made of natural fibres, they can be cut up and chucked on a compost heap. Do you know anyone who is an avid composter? The brown crusty bits won't be a problem then!

No idea what they are made off, and don't forget the brown crusty bits are origin carnivore, not herbivore.

In smallish quanties certainly no problem and remember that many of our carnivore friend are fed rice rich diets.

I went to our local déchetterie yesterday with a full van (as usual as they charge by the "visit", not the quantity ). Over the years, I became friendly with them. So, I explained your situation : here, they would say to put them in the skip for "déchets ultimes" (it's the place for everything which has no chance of being recycled or not worth recycling because it would cost too much). But they suggested that you ring your own déchetterie as they could have a different policy where you live. (This is France...). As they say: "we much prefer people to ask rather than messing a skip by putting in it something wrong and advicing is part of our job !"
