That's a bit glib, no? It covers liquid assets, but what about treasured possessions that you want to pass on? Think about it.....a) nobody knows how long they've got b) would you live in a totally empty house?
Must admit, if the time comes that you need to go into a care home, problem solved, as at current rates any assets would soon disappear.
There are even limits on gifts during your lifetime. It would be easy enough to spend up to the hilt keeping a property maintained by tradespeople, but that's hardly going to give pleasure to people you care about, is it?
It seems that what is bugging Hughnique is the impossibility of distributing what is rightfully your own where and how you see fit. I'm 100% with him on that. It's plain wrong in a so-called 'free' society.

We gave everything to the two kids some time ago and paid a little tax (their taxes). we are allowed to stay put and act as if it is still our property. Had a friendly notaire give a reasonably low value to the estate as we were still restoring everything. It was easily done and saves a whole lot of hassle later. The only down side is the agro of getting their signatures on documents concerning the forest and land management as one lives in Tokyo and the other somewhere between Beirut, Cyprus and The Netherlands.
