RIP Robert Redford
The one remake that I think did add to the original was Titanic which was a remake of A Night to Remember. the latter followed rather rigidly the testimony of the survivors. The modern version added, predictably, love interest but was good (IMO) for all that even if it did not follow the witness accounts quite as religiously.

Many years ago (and I do mean many) I was on holiday in Brittany and was listening to the radio. There was an old french lady being interviewed as she had reached 103 years old. The interviewer asked her to what she attributed her longevity. She said the usual things like eating well, being moderate with alcohol and doing active work but she said - However mostly to the fact that I didn't get on the Titanic but chose to stop in America with my boy friend of the time.
