Asiatic hornets

#61 Post by Blaze »

Just emptied 2 feeders - loads of the asians buggers in there. I'm beginning to wonder if the traps are actually attracting them here. It was scary taking them down and putting them back once emptied - they were buzzing about furiously.
Bit of a double-edged sword. It's pointless killing off the workers as they will die off anyway, it's the queens I want to catch and I've no idea if I've been successful or not. One thing's for sure, I'll be putting traps out in the spring because anything caught should be a queen before she lays her eggs ...

What size holes in your traps Blaze?
Seeing your success I've just bought 4 traps but holes at 10mm seem a bit large so I've reduced two traps down to about 7mm with bits of silicon tube.
Gonna give 'em a go this afternoon if I can find enough 'stuff' for bait.
We've got lots of the buggers feeding off the apple windfalls so it'll be interesting so see what's caught.

My traps don't have little holes. The hornets go in from the bottom and the gap is about 3cm. They can't get out again and fall into the sweet liquid mixture around the entrance hole that attracted them there in the first place. Before emptying, I squirt some wasp killer to make sure they're all dead.
This is exactly the model I have and I've ordered a couple more from Amazon today. They're brilliant. Bees can't fly into them. Apparentmy you can use them for trapping mosquitoes depending on what you use to attract them :

Blaze, could you post the Amazon link to them, please?

Edit: What would you use to attract mosquitos??

An arm full of fresh blood.

Seriously though

They detect humans (probably other victims as well) by the Carbon Dioxide we produce but I am not sure you could simulate that with say fizzy water.

Sorry it's such a long link, but it does work !

Re mosquitoes, I've had to look it up (!) because I've never tried it before.
Suggestions are : sugar, water and bicarb which apparently releases carbon dioxide which attracts mozzies (Exile might know more ! Ah, just crossed with you, Exile !)
Cidre vinegar with sugar

I hadn't thought of using traps for mozzies, but I like the idea. Perhaps having one in the bedroom would attract a mozzie more than we would ... worth a try ! But I wouldn't want to attract other buzzy things - European hornets fly at night :o
