Poland stokes fears of leaving EU

#1 Post by Blaze »

On Thursday, Poland's Constitutional Tribunal ruled that key articles of one of the EU's primary treaties were incompatible with Polish law, in effect rejecting the principle that EU law has primacy over national legislation in certain judicial areas.
The EU has condemned some of the sweeping changes made to the Polish judiciary.
Both (Poland's prime minister Mateusz) Morawiecki and Poland's most powerful politician, PiS chairman Jaroslaw Kaczynski, insist Poland wants to stay in the EU.
They accuse the country's fragmented opposition of spreading "fake news" to frighten an electorate that overwhelmingly supports membership, even if more Poles now voice concerns about losing sovereignty to the EU.
They acknowledge membership has given Poland access to billions of euros to invest in projects that have visibly transformed the country's landscape, as well as access to the single market.
Poland has much to lose if it does decide to leave the EU though perhaps countries like France and Germany are being too quick to jump.

As net recipients, they have a lot to lose - so I suspect this is just a bit of politicking.

However the German constitutional court has made similar decisions in the past - so maybe something needs to be "clarified" at an EU level.

It usually boils down to money in the end and how to squeeze the EU for loans/grants .... politics at play again ...

Brussels is determined to impose a one size fits all view of Europe controlled by non elected officials in the Commission. Not all countries in Europe are prepared to be moulded in their way; it is very healthy that their should be dissent and variety.

But look at the double standards; Spain was able to try and imprison democratically elected politicians who wanted wanted Catalonia to be independent and was not censured by Brussels, just an example of double standards.

Still pedalling that nonsense? You'll be having us believing it next.

The non-elected civil servants control nothing all the while that their suggestions have to be ratified by the elected leaders of the EU states and often subsequently by the EU parliament. You really should do an EU constitutional law 101 course.

Me too, but I was appalled at the treatment of Catalonian politicians whose only crime was to hold a referendum on independence. Some were gaoled and at least one driven into exile in a country, Belgium, who had the good sense not to return him on warrant, likewise the Italians in Sardinia.

If the Scots fail to get the go ahead from London for another ref and hold one anyway, I hardly believe even Johnson would try to lock up Nicola Sturgeon.

The Polish people do not want to leave the EU as shown by demonstrations all over Poland at the weekend.

Poland is the biggest beneficiary of funds from the EU and their workforce wants to retain free movement.

No, this is the PiS party playing politics.
