Not to Angoulême, next week to Italy, too late for the first event.
September 2026: Gran Premio Nuvolari (September 17–20), a highly prestigious international regularity rally for historic cars. The massive 1,100 km route spans five Italian regions, also Umbria. The route: stopping at the Autodromo dell'Umbria in Magione and winding through historic local city centers. Also the Cronoscalata della Castellana (September 25–27, 2026) a famous Italian hill climb event celebrating its 53rd edition. While it features modern race cars, it traditionally highlights a spectacular lineup of historic racing vehicles. Not far away from our temporary address, in Orvieto, Umbria. To October: the Modena Cento Ore (October 6–11, 2026). One of Italy's premier luxury historic car challenges, combining circuit racing and closed-road hill climbs. While it originates across the border in Emilia-Romagna/Tuscany, the rally's changing multi-day transit stages frequently dip into the scenic roads and valleys of neighboring Umbria.
Last but not least, to-do list, buy an extra memory card for my little Panasonic camera.

I’m afraid that, with my 2010 petrol Mitsubishi Outlander, I’ll be lucky if they even let me get anywhere near there...

There are many different paths that lead to motoring bliss, certainly in the 1960s and 1970s. Does size matter? Let me introduce the second one: a 1973 Ford LTD, a massive full-size American car, 6-seater, 8 cylinders, 7030 cm³. The last real super-sized wagons, an intro and the complete story.
The first one requires no further explanation. In any case, he didn’t respond to the name Herbie, and yet he did look a bit like him.

In the German press (Autobild) today:
Mercedes for sale, only 76 years young.
Only 830 Mercedes 170 S Cabriolet A were built. The 170 S was launched in 1949 and was, at the time, the top-of-the-range model in the Mercedes range. Alongside the saloon, there were two open-top versions: the four-seater Cabriolet B and the even more exclusive Cabriolet A with 2+2 seating. By the end of 1951, just 830 examples of the latter had been produced. This one features a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine producing only 52 PS, four-speed manual gearbox, top speed of 120 km/h. Price: 148,900 €.
