Whatever has happened to the weekend all of a sudden? Normally dull as ditchwater since Scandi noirs finished. But last night a Franky noir, 'Paris Police 1900', really noir, I mean I could hardly see a thing. But I did persevere through the first 2 episodes struggling to decide who was who and what the plot was, but I didn't completely lose it, the plot that is, and will give it another go next Saturday. A lot of dead people and other animals though and almost felt as if I needed waders to get through all the blood.

And now to tonight. A rehash of the 'Darling Buds of May' ('The Larkins'), presumable with a new cast. I sometimes avoid such things if much loved series are involved but I am really enjoying the revamped 'All Creatures Great and Small' and think it is better than the original. So I will give it a go. Not much competition there either, 'Brits in France' does not attract me.

After that a minor brain explosion, no less than 4 mouth watering offerings all on at the same time 10pm. I have bookmarked 'The Bell Jar' by the tragic Sylvia Plath, but am really torn between that and 'Ridley Road', 'A Year in Provence' with the delectable Carol Drinkwater (shades of All Creatures and Peter Mayal) but she actually lives and farms there in between writing books, and a new thriller 'Angela Black'.

It's a case of wondering which is most likely to be repeated (the hilarious 'Still Game' is always twice in one week thank goodness ) as my recently resurrected Humax does not seem able to record while watching another channel, much less record 3 while doing it.

I sometimes flick through the evenings entertainment, uttering the same word, crap, crap crap. Think there are a couple of Frenchie things on 4 or 5 tonight though, probably how not to renovate a chateau.

Well that was a disappointing couple of hours, three men in a menage a trois opening a British restaurant seemed to be the main theme of the programme, then Carol Drinkwater swanning about Provence telling us, at every opportunity, what a star she was.

Did anyone watch that? I wonder how it has changed. The original series kept so close to the original book(s) and the actors chosen fitted the roles so well. It was hard to read the books after watching the TV series without seeing the actors faces.

Well that was a disappointing couple of hours, three men in a menage a trois opening a British restaurant seemed to be the main theme of the programme, then Carol Drinkwater swanning about Provence telling us, at every opportunity, what a star she was.

You're a grumpy old bogger, Hugh, I gave Fran a choice between what I thought were 4 interesting candidates in the 10pm slot, my own preference was the Sylia Plath film, and she chose Provence. So we watched that and I quite enjoyed it. True she got a bit shrill when excited but, if nothing else I was heartened by seeing her plumpishness when remembering the highly fancyable actress in All Creatures, and also by the fact that she has lived in France longer than me and her French was no better than mine.

Did anyone watch one of the others, and want to tell me what I missed?

By the way [mention]hughnique[/mention] I deliberately avoided the Brits in France programme, was that the one you were referring too? While we're on the subject of that, does anyone remember that English bloke who opened up an Indian restaurant in France? He had a rather silly nickname, which I can't remember.

[mention]DominicBest[/mention] The Larkins was very true to the original and a great treat for me. I have long wanted Bradley Walsh to give up his ridiculously boring, but obviously very lucrative, game show roles and go back to acting, in which he excels. Like David Jason before him, he is perfect in the role, as I knew he would be.

While on the subject of remakes, the new 'All Creatures Great and Small' is even better than the original in my opinion. I never did quite take to Christopher Timothy in the role of Herriot and much appreciate the new bloke who, with Scottish accent and background, is much closer to the books.

Nigel and Nippy - bought a house in the Ardeche.

The first episode went out 2 days before we set off on our pre-planned house hunting journey!

Don't know what happened to Nippy but Nigel died of cancer around 10 years ago.
