Ceiling fans

Nothing wrong with these cheap run-of-the-mill fans, floor or table models. In this case a chair standing type, a rather small chair, got it from my parents at the age of four. Several speeds and rotating mechanism.

Just a note, fans in the bedroom overnight are supposed to disturb your sleep, and tend to be noisy. We've found using a humidifier the best for cooling.(other than an AC unit) Ours is on a shelf over the bed. It has nozels you can direct, so you get a lovely cool mist over you. ( Much like they use on veg counters in the supermarket.

Definitely worth buying. We brought two ceiling fans with us from the UK years ago, and although we don't use them that often, just lately they've been invaluable. One's in the dining room, the other in the kitchen/diner. They are three speed with lights, and our ceilings are very high, so I lowered them with 40-cm lengths of 16mm copper pipe which also makes the chains that control the light and speeds accessible.

I guess it depends on the make of each fan / humidifier as to how noisy they are. Our humidifier is almost silent.
It's the air movement from a fan that's supposed to disturb sleep.

The one I linked to is totally silent at speeds 1&2, on max speed it's still barely audible but not enough to disturb sleep, it's an order of magnitude quieter than any freestanding fan I've ever encountered.

Frankly on full speed the sheer force of the airflow could make sleep pretty difficult for some.

Even here in Spain we never use maxspeed, low or med is all that's ever necessary.

Another thing worthy of note is that they are perfectly balanced out of the box, many others come with small weights with which you have to balance them after installation.

For some reason that I have never found a scientific study to denounce, I consider these humidifiers potential spreaders of the next generation of lung infections. I try to avoid them in supermarkets on the veggie stalls and when I see them in an indoor garden feature. I am afraid though, that with the future climate they will appear everywhere on the streets in shopping areas and outdoor terraces. I saw my first terrace humidifier over a small beirgarten in Munich in 2005, but I don't get out at all these days, hate travelling, finished with all that thanks.

As for sleeping with a fan I sleep OK with our floor standing one.

I have just brought back a Rowenta "silent" model for the bedroom.

If you see me posting at 1am then you will know it is not silent!
