People around here must be very rude as I've been given NY wishes several times.

Biloute - in the UK people send cards for Christmas which can also include New Year wishes. Knowing the postal rush at this time of year, there are some who send their cards early - at the beginning of December !!! I don't suppose that would go down well with French etiquette

NO ! It's too early ! You all deserve to be sent back to the UK unless you follow a French etiquette course . According to the old tradition here, we do not wish Happy New Year before December 31 at midnight: that would be impolite, even rude, not to say offending. But, you can do it throughout the month of January (if you send a paper card, do not mail it after the 15th because the Post Office is overwhelmed). Afterwards, it would be also rude or contemptuous, not to mention offensive.
But I can still wish you to end the year well with lots of good things to eat and drink.
