Using oven gloves i run the lid end under hot water for a few seconds that usually solves the problem.

I have problems with the glass phials that some of my medicines come in, I can never break the end off of the blasted things without cutting my self.

Off on a slight tangent, but it makes me cross to slightly manic furious. Being asked to provide copies of documents by the same organisation who generated them in the first place, even though you'd already sent a copy a year ago and even send them a copy of their message acknowledging receipt of said copy! Another maddening case of different departments who don't talk to each other, or your Dossier doesn't have all your details on it! Arggghhhhh!

Yes, been there. Some are easier to break than others, so I always use a tea towel or J cloth !

My bugbear is the flip top on water bottles (yes, we do use gourds and tap water as well) - impossible to open without splashing yourself.
But at least tooth brush wrappings are easier than they used to be.

Like [mention]Doug[/mention] I always run jars under the hot tap before attempting to open. If that doesn't work and I don't want to keep the jar, I pierce the lid with a bradawl which always works.

Being avid preservers of things
The old kilner jars with a rubber rung were a pain having to get some pliers to pull the ring to break the seal.
Now with a replacable lid its easy to pearce it with a knife to release the vacuum.

I got involved recently in this discussion elsewhere and tried all the above mentioned to get jars open. I didn't like piercing the lid (tiny shards of metal in my jam ) or under the hot tap, or banging on a worktop but my long time method of banging twice with a grip opener handle was often ineffective.

I then discovered that if I held the jar very tightly rather than holding it on the worktop, and banged it 3 times, but very hard, the grip then opened it. However, I transferred the effort from turning the grip to holding the grip tight to my chest and turning the jar itself. Works every time now.

But if taken from the fridge, it may be necessary to dry the jar with a tea towel first.
