It does provide lane guidance and a 3-d option, also available in auto mode, it changes if Mrs / Mr Waze thinnks it might be useful. Voice control: by pairing the app with your phone’s virtual assistant (Google Assistant or Siri) or using Waze's conversational reporting, you can navigate and report hazards hands-free.

Compared with Google Maps the lane guidance is better in my opinion. When using Google Maps I thought: I would have liked to see or hear an earlier announcement (dense traffic).

Thanks everyone - I had suggested WAZE, our daughter uses it and so do the Taxi drivers I've used - I don't like the idea of google following us around so we'll use WAZE then.

I find Waze excellent to use, following a very short time of utter confusion when I first used it and kept going round and round in circles in and out of Wales when trying to find our way back to our b&b not far from the border.

About tracking, there is not such a thing as a free lunch. Realtime traffic information is only possible thanks to 'crowd funding' by tracking its users. Waze constantly collects real-time GPS locations and travel speeds to detect road works, accidents, traffic jams. Also comparing it with 'normal' conditions, earlier harvested data. The invisible mode hides your username from other drivers on the map but does not stop it from tracking your exact location.

Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced car GPS that has free 'danger zone' alerts, that don't need a subscriptions S.V.P.

Garmin sat navs have the French danger zones incorporated. Used to be 3 or 4 free updates a year but I haven't used mine for some time.

My Kia cars have Tom Tom based mapping which includes DZs and two free updates per year.

Waze also has a system where you flag something you see like a broken down car and the system adds it in. It’s very helpful. Ignoring the fact that some overheating data centre is collecting god knows what information about us all as we trundle around!

Available for Android and Apple phones and also as web pages https://www.here.com/products/wego It has 'danger zone' alerts and downloadable maps so you can opt to work without a permanent mobile connection
It also has public transport, walking, cycling, and motor bike routing options.
