So true. Such a shame they suffer from the genetic dysfunction of most Japanese cars. Rust.

The Targa Florio was a legendary, dangerous historic car race in Sicily (1906 – 1977), founded by Vincenzo Florio. It took place on winding public roads in the Madonie Mountains, often following the ‘Circuito Piccolo delle Madonie’ route of approximately 72 km. And sometimes full-speed through little villages, masses of spectators right along the roads. Between 1955 and 1973, it was a key round of the World Sportscar Championship. In 1973, Dutch racing driver Gijs van Lennep won the legendary, final ‘true’ Targa Florio in Sicily in a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR (car number 8). The race was canceled after 1973 as a world championship event following multiple fatalities, including two in 1973 and a final fatal incident involving spectators in 1977.

After 46 years Gijs van Lennep went back to Sicily to meet an old friend. To enable English translations for a Dutch-spoken YouTube video, click the CC button, select Settings (gear icon), click Subtitles/CC, select Auto-translate, and pick your preferred language.

As a schoolboy, I couldn’t get enough of pictures like this: imagine, only a blue sky above you and driving along a seaside promenade on a sun-drenched afternoon. Later, when you’re all grown up, no more teachers, no more homework, no more tests or exams, just doing whatever you fancy all day long...sweet dreams were made of this.
