Starting the wood fire gets easier over Christmas. Save your leftover candles and make firelighters.
Missus PE invented her own by melting the wax leftovers and pouring the wax into egg boxes filled with sawdust and wood shavings. Each cell makes a very good flare and starts the fire every time.
Now I worry how to store them, as they are remarkably flammable.

I respect people who are practical + creative. One benefit from your homemade firelighters is that they won't stink of paraffin.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

I buy a 20l bidon of the cheapest Pétrole pour poêles for fire lighting. Lasts me for years.
Two 'starter' logs in the woody, wipe the glass with a piece of kitchen roll. Dip same paper in petrol & put between starter logs, light & add a bit of kindling when chimney pulling well. Close door & sit back.
Job done. No smells, no hassle.

I usually put the petole in a squeezy bottle and dose the logs to light up and with 4 different. Fires to light (of the other 7 some are only lit when guests stay) during these cold days, I tend to use 2 bidons a year.

I was in BricoMarche the other day and notices they had two sorts of petrole. €40 and €52 for 20litres. I didn't know Ukraine was supplying it these days.

They aren't supplying petrol or diesel either - but the cause remains the same.
Limit Russian oil exports or oil based products and the price worldwide goes up.
Russia was the third largest oil producing country in the world in 2020 - just a tad behind the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
