A little off thread but it seems appropriate for petrol heads, in the afternoons we have been watching a series on the building of top end cars, yesterday it was the turn of the GT40, the American muscle car, however it is not really American the yanks had no history of race cars so they came to the Uk it was designed and built by Lola, driven by the yanks and was very successful, they are still building them in South Africa with the original UK patterns, even down to the original "Smiths" instruments, the weird part is that they supply them without engines, the client has a choice of what to put in at home.

I was unaware of that story. Very interesting indeed. All I remember about Shelby was him making a sneering remark about Corvettes, "If you can drive a Corvette you can drive anything", to do with its lack of race bred handling. I was driving one at the time so it didn't endear him to me at all.
I was also a bit peeved when failing to score with a female at a party in West L.A., later to be told she was Shelby's current girlfriend.

@ Hotrodder, top end cars need top end tyres. This impressive truck as pictured above has ENGLEBERT tyres. For the F1 races today it' is Pirelli, In the history of auto racing there was much competition not only in terms of engine, chassis and aerodynamics, but also tyres. One of the top brands during the 1950s in terms of racing rubber was Belgium's Englebert. Founded in 1898, first factory in Liège. Anno 1958, Englebert's independence came to an end, the start of Uniroyal-Englebert, in 1967 the name Englebert disappeared.

Remaining in the collective memory of petrol heads nice adds.

My earliest memory of the importance of tyres was after learning the massive difference between bald Dunlops and brand new quality rubber. When the fourth layer of canvas was visible I decided to get some new Michelin X. Nearly lost the plot completely on the first freeway off ramp. New tyres with tread do not stick like slicks on hot dry tarmac.
