Carnage in the courgettes

#1 Post by Headers »

Despite my best efforts - paillage, dome of protection over and around my courgettes, this morning I found a zone of devastation.
The commando rabbits have infiltrated the barriers and uprooted two of my 5 remaining plants - 2 went after a previous assault.
I am at the point of surrender.

The best bet is fencing then put something like red pepper or spray Jeyes fluid round the outside - most creatures hate the smell ! You have to keep spraying the Jeyes, but it does work. It even keeps deer from nibbling plants/trees.

Me too ! I've been using it to spray plants infested with blackfly and ants, always a problem at this time of year. Sadly it will affect other insects, but they've even attacked the pyrocanthas which I've never seen before.

The perpetrator has been identified. It’s a big hare!
It left the jeyes treated courgette bed alone but turned it’s attention to the tomato bed.

What is it digging for?

Our farmer neighbour informs me that there at least 10 big hares in the surrounding fields this year. I caught my cat, Rosie, having a stand-off with one of them yesterday. I think she's got it worried

Hares are such rare, fragile and beautiful creatures, could you not plant some extra crops for them?
