Gadgets to help with opening lids

Don't know about you, but I have a devil's own job trying to get lids and tops off things. My arthritic hands just aren't strong enough. What do you use?

Gadgets to help with opening lids

I have the same problem. I have a gadget that I bought in Winchester at least 35 years ago which has now given up the ghost. However, I now use the old-fashioned remedy with food jars of tapping the lid on a table to break the vacuum. Works every time. O'therwise, you can obtain jar openers from Amazon - I bought one a couple of years ago for a 96-year old.

It's really useful because it adjusts to anything from a bottle top, through to jars, SuperU about 5 euros. I would highly recommend it.

I agree with MAD about the tapping !
I've noticed waiters open a bottle of fruit juice by tapping the top.
I thought that might work with bottles and jars at home ! Out with the old-fashioned rolling pin, give the lid a hard tap in the middle to break the seal, and it comes off with no problems at all ! A hammer will do if you don't have a rolling pin :D I don't want to risk hurting my "musician's" hands by using them !!!

The problem comes when you try to open a bottle. Milk bottles are particularly difficult. Bubbles aren't that easy either ;) . So this little thing is great for that.

I had no success at all with the rubber toothed gadget.
But I remembered a method for opening jars with metal lids that always seems to work. Run the metal top under hot water for several seconds and those stubborn metal lids suddenly decide to open.

It occurs to me that this thread would be just as useful for men to read as they also experience difficulties as they get older. Perhaps we should consider if some Ladies Only topics might perhaps be posted on the open forum and stick to strictly female issues on here?

I've been using something like this for years. Mine has metal teeth in the V and will grip bottles and jars of any size. If you take a look on Amazon there's even one that can be fixed under a cupboard.

I must admit that the only people I ever come across talking about this problem is women, but you have a point in that men may also need help. Shall I post and see?

Sounds like a good idea to me.
I can move this thread to the general area if Mangetout, would like it moved.
