Hardly surprising when, e.g., pork is being retailed at little over €2 / kilo. There's absolutely no sense in farmers producing at a loss.

The price of pork always yoyos like this; as prices drop, farmers produce less then prices rise, they overproduce and prices fall. Bit like foxes and rabbits.

Not sure what gestation period is for a pig - but I guess with the rearing time to get piglets to slaughter size it must be a year or so in total - not conducive to responsive planning.

The issue then is compounded by China importing less pig meat that then has to find other markets in a global trading environment.

I wonder where the €2/kg pork originated from?

Gestation period 114 days - she's then ready to breed again about 28 days after giving birth. Pigs for ordinary pork are normally slaughtered at 6 months, for bacon about 8 months.

A few years ago the culprits for low prices were the Poles who undercut the French by a significant bit which caused the expected rumpus.
A while ago I happened to live near a large pork producer and asked the owner if he was hurting. He said that because he was big enough the could compete with and even undercut the Poles and that the problem was really that many producers in France were just too small to be competitive. A lesson not yet learned?

It may be a serious problem for the farmers but here in Brittany the quality of pork is the best I've ever had and it's still cheap enough for the likes of us to enjoy. Beef (even rubbish cuts) is pretty much off the menu and chicken is 50/50 due to price. Even sausages get to silly prices during the BBQ season.

I love piglets, we nearly had one as a pet
