I expect those who already live and travel to the big cities already know about this/have one. Not sure when it became obligatory, as daughter has only just been told to apply for one in Toulouse.

It's only 3,70euro to get a sticker for the windscreen, and there's a map on the link to show which cities have made it mandatory.
Some locations requiring Crit'Air stickers cover larger areas than just a city. The requirement of when to display is linked to prefectorial decrees concerning pollution levels.

The map in the link is out of date.

@ Polarengineer: even if you are not heading downtown, only trying to avoid Paris by taking the Francilienne, it's sometimes convenient to have this sticker. I remember a story of a guy, an accident had happend, traffic diversion, who had to go into forbidden territory. Easy hunting for the gendarmes, soyez le bienvenu ici à côté de la route A86....a fine.

Already announced by Ségolène Royal in 2015 this crit'air thing made its official start in 2016, the longest day, June 21, with the publication in le Journal Officiel. I don't want to invite you to start reading this government publication everyday, boring, but on the other hand I do remember a quite intensive coverage in the newspapers and tv in those two years.

Is Crit'Air on the A86 - I thought it was only within the BP in Paris.

From the first of June 2021, according to le Parisien, within the A86 circle:

" La zone à faibles émissions métropolitaine (ZFE), constituée depuis 2019 dans le périmètre intérieur de l’A86, connaît une nouvelle phase d’expansion : au 1er juin, les restrictions de circulation des voitures polluantes s’étendent aux modèles classés Crit’Air 4. Explications. "

This year's Paris ZFE road map. The A86 itself - so far - is not included:

" Depuis le 1er juin 2021, les règles de la ZFE s’appliquent de manière uniforme : les véhicules catégorisés Non classés, Crit’Air 5 et Crit’Air 4 ne peuvent pas rouler dans l’ensemble du territoire compris à l’intérieur de l’autoroute A86, à l’exclusion de celle-ci, aux jours et horaires suivants. "

They are cheap and easy to get; it seems easier to buy one and stick it on the windscreen rather than go to the bother of avoiding centres where it is required, unless of course your car is in the forbidden group.

No, sorry, I can't. I know it's out-of-date because some locations where Crit'Air applies are not on it. Lille metropole for example. Connexion France had 25 locations listed in June 2019. I can't find a current map so it may need a search for a particular area to check.

I've had Crit'Air and the German Umwelt stickers since they were introduced as, at that time, I was travelling regularly in Germany and France where they were required.

The Crit'Air sticker is only required when a departmental decree is issued declaring a pollution crisis. The German sticker is always needed to enter any zone to which it applies. In both countries "parking wardens" can issue penalty notices for not displaying.

This link https://www.ecologie.gouv.fr/certificat ... oll-nav__6 gives a list of places where it might be applied due to air pollution together with more specific links to individual departmental prefectures
and https://www.bison-fute.gouv.fr/zones-a- ... ilite.html gives the location of permanent low emission zones

Simply because most people only use their classics on high days and holidays, as proved by surveys undertaken in France by FFVE, the old car federation, and in other countries and validated by FIVA, the international old car federation.

FFVE has worked hard with govenrment and big cities to get the exemptions
How do people live without at least one dog in the house?

The Government also encourages people to upgrade their vehicles to keep the car industry going ! During the last 2 years (apart from the difficulty in obtaining some electronic parts made in China), registering of new cars plummeted because of the effects of the pandemic. The encouragement of "new car for only 299€ a month" is seducing many who are finding themselves with ever-growing monthly outgoings. Now with the price of fuel rising, many are going to find themselves in difficulty ....
