Mattress topper

Has anyone any experience of these mattress toppers, the type that arrive in a fag packet and when unleashed become enormous, bit like my belly. I have come to the conclusion that the French one I am on, and have been for some time is giving me a backache.

We bought a memory foam mattress topper from Ikea for our caravan mattress which was too firm. It was fine at first but became less comfortable after several week's worth of use and we're both fairly lightweight.
We came to the conclusion that it would have been better to change the mattress - we would never use a topper again. It was a false economy.

Edit : I agree with Niemeyjt about them slipping - only a little but irritating.

Not sure they will be thick enough to ease a dodgy back - I reckon you'll need an entire mattress - certainly the one at Dad's was awful - and being duck down kicked off my allergies as well. The one I have here is maybe more like your "fag packet" type from Ikea and makes no discernable difference - except it slips from time to time then is a PITA to put back.

Might be the case of a total replacement then, but every bed I have seen has a firm mattress, must have a better look at just the mattresses on their own, must say I wasn't that keen on these toppers, as said I doubt they are very stable and then the fitted sheet needs changing as well.

It's a complete myth that everyone should have a "firm" mattress and it's surprising how most mattresses on display everywhere seem to be "firm".
A mattress ideally needs to be supporting and the degree of firmness required would depend on a person's weight and size. Equally, the base springs or slats supporting the mattress needs to be in good condition.
The optimum time to change a mattress is usually around 10 years, but this obviously depends on amount of use, weight/size of users and quality of mattress. The type of mattress - pocket sprung, foam, memory foam etc is personal choice but as you spend half your life in bed, it's worth going for the best quality you can.

This is the problem knowing what to choose, the one I am on now is ressorts so I take it springs, only experience of memory foam was a pillow, like sleeping on a brick. They are not a cheap item but probably about time for rplacement.

Yes, some are like bricks. We've tried various ones but by far the best ones we've found are made by "Moshy". They're not cheap, but they come in various degrees of firmness. We don't like the ergonomic shapes either - the Moshy ones look like a normal pillow.

I built our bed years ago, two 90cm wide slat bases with a pine frame, took a long time trying mattresses till found ones to suit us, now though after my right hip replacement I find mine too hard so have put a thick duvet over it under the mattress cover.
