Another government announcement
In view of the dramatic rise in infections in France over this weekend, Gabriel Attal is give an announcement at 18h30 tonight (27 December) following a Conseil de défense sanitaire today.
Will there be a couvre feu after the 31st December ??? What other measures can we expect ?

I understood they were considering a couvre feu on 31/12 itself.
Extend the mask-wearing to outdoors, everywhere?
How much more can be done?

That'll go down well ! As you say, Mad, what more can they do ?
If people are going to be infected, it will be long before midnight, at least, at private parties. But perhaps they want to stop people rushing out in the streets at midnight and all and sundry mixing .... and spreading.
And to think i thought we might go first-footing this year ....

Well Char, apparently the good news (as recited to me yesterday) is that the more the virus mutates, the weaker the strain so we'll all just have a cold in a few months!
Blaze, I think first-footin might be off the menu, but where there's haggis, there's a hooley...

Although widely spread as a rumour, that is not a given.
It does look as if it is the case with Omicron (let's hope). The driving force however is transmission rate. The faster a virus transmits, the more it will become the dominant version. It could be mild. It could be very, very nasty.
It is true that a virus could be too virulent and kill its hosts before they have a real chance to pass on the virus to other victims and Ebola comes close to that - just hope it never reaches a major city that is also a world travel hub.
But back to C19, there is no given that it is forced to be less virulent. Transmission is its root to success not how nasty it can be.

Lets see if they bite the bullet and confine us all over NY or a bit longer, or is the election too near for them to dare. Up to now the French public have been pretty cooperative but another disruption of their lives might be the proverbial last straw.

How will everyone get rid of their clapped-out and worthless cars on the insurance this year without the traditional bonfires?
I hope they will change the silly 24-hour validity rule on PCR tests - when they take over 24 hours for the results to come through.
