That's a bargain
The building with the ivy on it is a hotel overlooking the river at Brantome. It was very busy yesterday.
I had my woman servant with me who said that looks nice. I checked out the prices.
A room with no view was cheaper some were 175.
We sat on a bench and had a free view of the river.
The hotel was busy so people were paying the prices.
Would you pay 250 a night for a room with a view?
We did splash out, she bought a second hand book in the English book shop for three euros. A Mexican author who she says is very good.
They also make very good white coffee.

Looks divine, hope it's worth the price. The creeper on the walls always looks attractive in the summer ... for the hosts of spiders lurking there !!
We haven't been to the Dordogne since the late 80s and even then we were surprised at how many Volvo estates and English voices there were. But the paysage is beautiful ....
I have rarely found a cafe in France that makes good coffee, perhaps just a question of taste !

Once upon a time I could afford it and did pay above that. Was it worth it? I can't remember so draw your own conclusions.

Glad you said a question of taste. I read on another forum posted by an American that he had never had a hot coffee here either.

I must live in the very best part of France, the coffee is delicious and hot. In one cafe cafe au lait is served with a pot of hot milk, not warm, hot.

Actually, now I think about it, when we had to go to Macdo to use our laptops, I did drink coffee there and it was fine !
I find cafe au lait or crême universally unspeakable, yet never had a problem in the UK, Germany, Spain or Italy. East Germany was a bit iffy though. I don't know what they do to it here. As for Grand' Mère .... it's the pits

Special deal of river view room + dinner only €450

Stayed in Brantôme three times over the years, twice when caravanning and once in a gîte.

Black coffee for me and my preference by country - Italy, Belgium, Holland, France, Germany.

For a quick coffee (and apple turnover ) stop en-route McDo is consistently good everywhere but I never use McDo otherwise.

Well one cannot walk in there with a mcdonalds happy meal bag, can one?

Still plenty of brits there but not a lot of volvo's now. We took some nice pictures I will post later.
It is a nice little town. Lunch should have been a washout but the French still ate outside under sun umbrellas kitted out in water proofs.
We had found somewhere where you could eat normal food but as the sky opened up just before midday we gave lunch a miss and headed home.

Edit, im a fussy eater she can eat anything.

McDos' coffee (why do the teenyteen serveuses not understand plain French (' petit cafe svp, brings the response Americano? Espresso?)) I persevere with 'petit cafe svp' and finally get it with a heavy pitying sigh, is ok when you need wifi and feel one ought to make the effort, always accompanied by an excellent mandise though.

I gave up when I was required, in a totally empty place, just opened in the morning, to talk to the magic screen in the pillar rather than the, almost, human at the counter. I allowed her to talk to the pillar for me on that occasion and ever after ignored both and just sat down with the laptop till I had checked everything urgent.
