Do we really actually need 5G?
As US Airlines warn of impending disruption to flights, when the mobile phone rollout gets switched on, I'm curious as to how necessary it all is to keep getting faster internet.

You will have to ask all the extinct rebellion lot and Woke brigade, they need to throw away their old phones every few months and buy new ones, while polluting the planet with their "I want new now" attitude. IMHO

Flogging off new spectrum every few years is a great revenue earner for Governments across the globe.
Furthermore, in the UK (not sure about France) they want to turn off 2G to reuse/resell that as well - so 2G phones (and other 2G devices like leccy meters) will have to be scrapped.
Standing still won't be an option.

I'd be happy with 1G. Although I understand that 5G is supposed to eliminate not-spots in cities, what about the not-regions in rural France?

The new version of Android, now being released, will have an option to turn OFF 2G.niemeyjt wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 1:09 pmFlogging off new spectrum every few years is a great revenue earner for Governments across the globe.

My Redmi 5G awaits the OTA with anticipation, France due in February.

Rural France, france profonde, ploucville will not get fibre anytime soon. The choice is between ADSL and a 4G router, maybe NSA 5G if free ISP available.
What is the difference?
ADSL 5 mbps.
4g cell service not less than 25mbps.....probably nearer to 60mbps.
But some ADSL users seem to experience some strange masochistic pleasure watching the rotating download circle icon. Not for me!!!

It seems weird that we are meant to be delighted at yet another (promised) internet speed increase that will only benefit people in or near larger towns and cities when so many of us in rural areas still suffer intermittent or no service at all.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

I live in la France profonde in la gâtine around 12 kms from Parthenay and a well known metropolis of just over 10,000.
At home I use 4G because I only have a Huawei B715s-23c modem/router.
When I visit Parthenay or elsewhere I use my newish 5G Xiaomi and smartphone.
Of course free is best having the 3 frequencies on most installations.
Do try the free 3G/4G/5G map to see what is available chez-vous.
